Who needs supplements

Significant new research by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the Department of Health has revealed that most people in the UK may not be getting the essential nutrients they need from their diet to maintain their health. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) - the largest dietary survey of its kind in the UK - showed that:

  • On average men only eat 2.7 portions of fruit and vegetables and women only eat 2.9 portions a day. This decreases further in the 19-24 year age group with only 4% of women and no men having the recommended 5 portions of fruit & vegetables a day
  • The majority of people in the UK are not getting their recommended daily allowance of many essential vitamins and minerals
  • The most common vitamins and minerals that people are missing out on include: vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc
  • Other evidence indicates that most diets are low in selenium as many crops are grown on selenium-depleted soils.

Vitamins and minerals are so essential for our health that the Government set targets for intake of the vitamins and minerals that are key to our health. In fact they can fight everything from the comon cold (Echinaccea), to depression (St John's Wort), they can help prevent birth defects, (Folic acid) and improve mental functioning (Omega 3 fatty acid).

The importance of antioxidants, such as Lycopene and Selenium are known to be crucial to good health-research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that taking a selenium supplement resulted in a 50% reduction in total cancer mortality.

Given the side effects of HRT many women are now successfully using herbal supplements (Black Cohosh, Soy Isoflavone) to combat some of the unpleasant symptons of the menopause. While men have been using a range of products (Saw Palmetto, Maca) to overcome various male complaints.

Certain vitamins and herbal extracts (Beta Sitosterol,CoQ10) have been demonstrated to help prevent heart disease the single biggest killer in the Western world.

Even the least well informed person is aware of the value of certain vitamins & minerals such as Vitamin C and Calcium.

Fewer people are aware that with a couple of exceptions the body cannot manufacture or synthesize vitamins. They must be supplied either in the diet or in dietary supplements.

Unfortunately, it is increasingly apparent that we are UNABLE to get the necessary level of vitamins and minerals from our diet. Not only, do we not eat the suggested 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but modern farming methods and food production process's are stripping the food of the very nutrients so essential for health.

Given the increasing awareness by both the public and the medical profession of the importance of vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements, which one's should you buy and from whom- as with all products some are better than others.
